National Nuclear Regulator(NNR)

Koeberg adheres to both South African and international safety rules and regulations. The watch dog over nuclear affairs in South Africa is the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). The NNR is the licensing authority that applies check and balances to ensure that Koeberg operates within set national and international standards.

World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO)

Koeberg belongs to the World Association of Nuclear Operators. This is an association that was constituted after the Three Mile Island accident in America. The Association sets standards for Nuclear Utilities as guidelines for excellent operation. They also conduct peer reviews. This entails nuclear specialists from all over the world visiting a nuclear power station to observe how they conduct their daily operations. A report is submitted to the power station concerned. The report will normally raise concerns which the power station can then investigate and take necessary steps to correct. When a power station is found to have good business practices, which could be of benefit to other operators, these are publicised so that the nuclear industry worldwide can learn and improve from each other's mistakes and successes.
