25 to 27 October 2016
Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Eskom (through Generation’s Peaking Operating Unit) will be hosting
the 28th African Hydro Symposium from 25 to 27 October 2016 at
Ingula, Eskom’s newest pumped storage scheme under construction and
the largest in Africa. This symposium is held annually and is a forum where
Hydro Operating Personnel, representing electricity utilities and Independent
Power Producers (IPP’s) from Africa, meet to share ideas and deliberate on
operation, development, maintenance and management of hydro power plants.
The vision of the African Hydro Symposium (AHS) is that of becoming
an internationally recognised body of hydro expertise, with the objective being
to facilitate technical interaction to enhance Hydro Plant Performance for the
mutual benefit of the participating utilities and IPPs.
The Hydro Symposium was launched in 1988 as a meeting of Eskom Hydro
Plant Operators; this was extended in 1990 to include Hydro Operating Personnel
representing electricity utilities, and IPP’s from Southern Africa. Delegates
meet once a year to transfer technical knowledge, discuss specific hydro
challenges and propose/craft solutions. As a result, technical contacts are
made and friendships forged. Due to the continued growth in representation,
this body then changed its name to African Hydro Symposium.
To facilitate technical interaction for the enhancement in hydro
performance, for the mutual benefit of the participating utilities and IPP’s.
This year’s theme for the African Hydro Symposium is Sustainable
Water – Sustainable Power
Approximately 200 delegates from power utilities are expected to
attend the symposium while an invitation has been extended to special guests
who are invited to attend only the gala event that will take place on 25
