Eskom learning institution, performance management and
the employee assistance programme

Eskom learning institution (ELI)
ELI drives training and development across Eskom. ELI’s role is becoming increasingly important as the skills challenge continues to mount. In response, ELI is embracing eLearning and forming learning partnerships with organisations such as Siemens, Protection Telecommunications & Measurement, Technisa and Denel.

ELI responds to immediate needs within functional areas and to strategic imperatives such as Eskom’s commitment to Asgisa, and specifically the need for accelerated skills transfer to drive economic growth.

Incentives and performance management

The eContract system (on line individual performance contracting) has been enhanced to make it more user-friendly. Functionality has been improved to enable users to work off-line. A “people management key performance area” was also introduced into the performance contracts of all managers. The performance incentive management system (PIMS) has been enhanced to accommodate split contracts between incentive pools for senior employees. This approach encourages team work and promotes the one Eskom mindset.

Employee assistance programme
Eskom also provides an employee assistance programme which ensures that all employees and their families have 24-hour access to support in the event of trauma or crisis. Most elements of this programme have been outsourced to a national supplier.
