The Eskom Climate Change strategy seeks to address the challenge through a comprehensive six-step approach:
Diversification of generation mix by increasing nuclear, gas, renewables, imports and clean coal 1. Diversification of Eskom’s energy mix 2. Eskom’s generation plant mix 3. Renewable energy: Eskom’s initiatives 4. Renewable energy: Sere wind farm Energy efficiency –reduce demand by 3038 MW in the 2012-2017 period and Internal Energy Efficiency measures (billion kWh programme) 1. Energy efficiency in the global & South African context 2. Eskom’s work on Integrated Demand Management 4. Solar Water Heating Rebate Programme 5. Efficient Lighting Programme involving the rollout of Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) Energy efficiency –reduce demand by 3038 MW in the 2012-2017 period and Internal Energy Efficiency measures (billion kWh programme) 1. Adaptation: Particulate Emission Control at Lethabo Power Station 3. Kusile and Medupi coal-fired power stations under construction Innovation through R&D, examples include solar thermal plant, smart grids, underground coal gasification 1.
