Philanthropy and welfare

Sinobuntu (“We Care / We are a caring organisation”) is one of Eskom’s core values implying that Guardians care about each other, their communities and South Africans as a whole. Employees are encouraged to reach out to communities through the i-Volunteer programme. The programme was launched in order to create a spirit of volunteerism amongst Eskom employees, and, over the years, has seen many people rally to the call and give of their time and skills in assisting various charity organisations. Each year, the i-Volunteer programme adopts a new theme, encouraging people around the country to celebrate the spirit of giving.

To celebrate Women’s Day each August, the Foundation hosts the Joy & Jewels charity event, to which companies are invited to sponsor tables and bid on wonderful pieces of jewellery and other exciting lots. All proceeds, as well as a generous donation from the Foundation, are then donated to a national non-profit organisation in accordance with the selected i-Volunteer programme theme for the year.
