DATA REQUIREMENTS FOR CALCULATING THE CARBON EMISSION FACTOR (CEF) FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN GRID
GENERAL INFORMATION
Fuel Consumption & Electricty Generated CO2 Emissions
OTHER INFORMATION REQUIRED
Grid specific information and data:
• Please refer to National Energy Regulator of South Africa (http://www.ner.org.za ) for information and data on non-ESKOM electricity generation sources.
Default Values (IPCC)
• IPCC – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (http://www.ipcc.ch/ ), the Revised 1996 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories
(http://www.ipcc-nggip.iges.or.jp/public/gl/invs1.htm )
• NCV for coal (IPCC 1996, Table 1-2, value for South Africa, 0.02509 TJ/t fuel).
• Emission factor for coal (EFcoal) 25.8 tC/TJ
• Emission factor for gas (EFgas) 15.3 tC/TJ (IPCC 1996 Table 1-1).
• OXID (generally 98% for coal and 99.5% for gas)
"Eskom specific CV values can be found in Eskom's Annual Report 2010, under tables (statistical overview). The report is also available on this website.
