Measurement & Verification

BACKGROUND

Measurement and Verification (M&V) is the independent analysis and reporting of energy efficiency and load management saving impacts.  M&V is designed to quantify and assess the impacts that result from EEDSM projects in an impartial manner. Independent assessment and reporting and processes are required to ensure its credibility.

The M&V procedure is outlined in the document 'Measurement and Verification Guideline for Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) projects' under the M&V Guidelines section  which is based on the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP). This SA M&V Guideline is typically updated once a year. More details on the IPMVP can be found at www.evo-world.org. Standardised Guidelines are developed and accepted for standard, well known and often used technologies. The M&V Guidelines also refers to the SABS: SANS 50010 standard, Measurement and verification of energy savings.

Energy Audit which is independently situated within the Performance assurance section in Eskom Assurance and Forensic department, is managing the M&V program. University M&V Teams are contracted to do the actual M&V work and reporting thereon independently for Energy Audit.
