The Eskom Foundation began supporting food security programmes as part of its commitment to fighting limited availability of food due to lack of employment opportunities and high food prices. It assists by providing basic farming needs and equipment and helping impoverished people to feed their families.

As part of its drive, the Eskom Foundation and the Ugu district municipality worked together to stimulate agriculture, encourage self employment and provide a fresh produce market for subsistence, semi-commercial and commercial farmers.
Five food security projects were also introduced to help poor communities become self sufficient by creating employment in their areas for 345 beneficiaries from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Eskom contributed tractors, containers, fencing and site establishment services – as well as seeds, tools and other inputs – for the Mthimude, Mpetsheni, Jericho and Phakath’ekhaya projects.
