Measurement and Verification better known as M&V, is the independent analysis and reporting of energy efficiency and load management saving impacts. Independent assessment and reporting and processes are required to ensure its credibility.

The M&V procedure is outlined in the document “The Measurement and Verification Guidelines for Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) Projects (version 10 revision 0, (or the latest available)”, which is based on the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP). This SA M&V Guideline is typically updated once a year. More details on the IPMVP can be found at www.evo-world.org  . Standardised Guidelines are developed and accepted for standard, well known and often used technologies.

M&V is developed to evaluate and establish the impacts on any energy source, although this function was mainly focussed on projects/programmes impacting on the South African electrical supply.

Energy Audit which is independently situated within the Performance assurance section in Eskom Assurance and Forensic department, is managing the M&V program. University M&V Teams are contracted to do the actual M&V work and reporting thereon independently for Energy Audit.
