Eskom Guardians work tirelessly to save the lives of miners trapped underground
Friday, 02 February 2018: Eskom notes with encouragement the sterling job by the multidisciplinary team in the Free State restoring power in the early hours of this morning – on time to ensure that all the miners that were trapped underground at the Sibanye-Stillwater’s Beatrix Gold Mine were safely returned to the surface.

Eskom would like to sincerely express words of gratitude to the mine, Eskom employees and all stakeholders involved for their collaborative approach in working around the clock to ensure the safe return of all those trapped underground.

The two 132 kV lines supplying mines in the Welkom area collapsed due to a severe storm at 23h18 on Wednesday night, leaving mines in the area without electricity supply.

Interim Group Chief Executive Phakamani Hadebe said: “I would like to commend the team for working around the clock to ensure that power was restored, especially to the mine where workers’ lives were at risk.  The team’s effort demonstrated a shared act of humanity and is in line with our Value of Sinobuntu (We Care) which, alongside other five values, underpins our business operations.”

Group Executive for Distribution, Mongezi Ntsokolo, also commended the employees and all the stakeholders who worked hand-in-hand for demonstrating high levels of professionalism and enthusiasm.  “Though they faced a mammoth task which needed to be executed with an utmost sense of urgency, they still maintained Zero Harm, preventing further harm to the environment and ensuring that no injuries were sustained in the process,” Ntsokolo said.

This story of excellence augurs well for Eskom as the organisation turns 95 years on 01 March and whose journey has not only been to provide electricity, but is characterized by a rich history of positively impacting on the lives of South Africans and demonstrating good corporate citizenship.

Customers are requested to remain patient while Eskom Guardians are still working around the clock to restore power to the rest of the areas that were affected by the storm.
