Run by the provincial Department of Education, the competition attracts 45 000 learners from across the province annually and aims to increase the number of high school learners who take up mathematics as a subject. Its focus is on conceptual knowledge, the application of knowledge in new situations, problem-solving, reasoning, communication and creative thinking.
Speaking about Eskom’s involvement in the initiative, Eskom Development Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Cecil Ramonotsi, said: “Exposure to mathematics, science, technology, innovation and engineering activities is critical in equipping youngsters with the tools they need in order to contribute positively to our country’s economy. We have seen this competition motivate youngsters to hone their mathematical abilities and inspire them to look into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers.”
Winners from Xariep district will compete with successful participants from the Fezile Dabi, Lejweleputswa, Thabo Mofutsanyana and Motheo districts in the provincial maths festival taking place at the Bon Hotel in Bloemfontein on 11 - 12 October 2019.
“Funding this programme forms part of Eskom’s commitment to bringing about meaningful and sustainable development in South Africa’s communities,” concluded Ramonotsi.
