About the Schoolyard

Eskom’s Education Programme aims to educate school children about the value of electricity and the important role it plays in bringing so much comfort into the home.

Furthermore, it aims to bring awareness to the fact that “flicking a switch” is so quick and easy one almost never considers the hugely.

About the Schoolyard

Eskom’s Education Programme is committed to making a meaningful contribution to teaching South Africa’s children about the importance of being responsible consumers. The programme continues this year with a special focus on the value of electricity and the quality of convenience it brings to the many facets of our daily lives. ‘Switching on’ makes it possible to study in a lit room after dark. To gather facts and figures on electronic devices day and night. To cook, clean, wash, stay warm, remain cool and watch our

preferred channels on television. The value of electricity is evident everywhere; as such, the importance of consuming it wisely

forms the basis of Eskom’s CAPS (Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement) curriculum aligned teacher guides and learner activity sheets for Grade R to Grade 9 learners. Developed across a variety of subjects, one of the programme’s aims is to improve the quality of mathematics and science education in South Africa by partnering with educational initiatives also committed to this cause.

The Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy is a proud example of such an initiative. With a partnership dating back to 2012, Eskom will once again share its curriculum aligned natural science material for use at some of the academy’s 2018 teacher development workshops in Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces.

Impressively over 1 500 teachers have registered for Thandulwazi’s teacher development programme at three sites in Gauteng and Limpopo this year. “We value the collaborative partnerships forged with a range of stakeholders over the last 12 years. And we remain grateful to one and all for sharing Thandulwazi’s vision of a country where all our children will have access to well-resourced schools, staffed with professional well-trained educators, providing quality teaching across the phases and particularly in gateway subjects” says Bev Johnson Deputy Head of Advancement, St Stithians Foundation, Thandulwazi & Strategic Projects.

Eskom congratulates the Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy for their impressive achievements in education over the years. It remains a special honour to be able to partner with the academy and share our curriculum aligned mathematics and science material as a tool to help train South Africa’s teachers.
