Long Term Sustainability

Formal proclamation of a Nature Reserve

The Ingula Partnership Steering Committee influenced a proposal to consider a proclamation of the Ingula land as a Nature Reserve, so as to ensure the conservation of the sensitive sites into the future. There are a number of benefits that may be derived through the proclamation of a Nature Reserve that will aid the management of the reserve and provide good exposure of the Ingula Partnership and the work that is being done.

Eskom has indicated its intention to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife (EKZNW) and the Department of Environmental Affairs in June 2011. Should proclamation of the Ingula land occur, it will be the first project of its kind in South Africa.

Ramsar

The Ingula Partnership Steering Committee also initiated a feasibility study to have the area declared a Ramsar site. Declaration as a Ramsar site adds significant international protection status to wetlands and will ensure the long-term protection of the Bedford Wetland.
