Stage 2 loadshedding to be implemented from 21:00 tonight until 06:00 tomorrow, and will resume from 09:00 tomorrow until further notice
Thursday, 30 January 2020: Eskom will implement stage 2 loadshedding from 21:00 tonight until 06:00 tomorrow morning owing to system constraints and our depleted emergency resources. We have been using pumped storage schemes and open cycle gas turbines flat-out during the day in order to supplement capacity, and we need to replenish these overnight.

Stage 2 loadshedding will resume from 09:00 tomorrow (Friday) as the system remains tight. The system operator will continue to monitor the power grid closely, and we will give an update early tomorrow morning once we have reviewed the performance of the power system overnight.

Unplanned outages were slightly reduced at 12 742 MW as at 20:00 this evening.

To assist us in reducing the stage of loadshedding, we appeal to customers to continue to use electricity sparingly:
  • Set air-conditioners’ average temperature at 23ºC
  • Switch off your geysers over peak periods
  • Use the cold water tap rather than using the geyser every time
  • Set your swimming pool pump cycle to run twice a day, three hours at a time for optimal energy use.
  • At the end of the day, turn off computers, copiers, printers and fax machines at the switch. Avoid stand-by or sleep mode.

We apologise unreservedly to South Africans for the negative impact this may have on them. Customers are advised to check their loadshedding schedules on the Eskom website (loadshedding.eskom.co.za) or municipal websites depending on who supplies them.
