Mpumalanga Maths and Science

The Eskom Development Foundation (ESDEF) demonstrated its commitment to education by supporting the Mpumalanga Mathematics and Science Competition in Witbank on 14 and 15 October 2025. Organised with the Nkomazi Mathematics Centre, this partnership represents more than just funding; it’s a long-term investment in the region’s education.

The 2025 competition successfully reached many learners, especially those from disadvantaged communities across Mpumalanga. ESDEF’s support aims to improve academic results and create opportunities for talented students who might otherwise be overlooked. The competition is free at all levels − school, circuit, district, and provincial, making it accessible to everyone.

Participants competed in various categories, tackling challenging problems that tested their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The atmosphere was electric as young minds worked through complex equations and scientific concepts, supported by enthusiastic educators and mentors.

Leadership That Shows Up

ESDEF’s involvement went beyond money. Acting CEO, Mologadi Motshele, actively participated throughout the two-day event, opening the ceremony and engaging with students, teachers, and stakeholders. Her hands-on approach showed that the Foundation is genuinely invested in each participant’s success.

“Seeing the determination and brilliance of these young people reminds us why this work matters,” Motshele shared while interacting with the competitors. Her presence sent a clear message to learners: your education is important, your potential is valued, and your future matters.

Building Tomorrow’s STEM Leaders

In her address, Motshele explained why these programmes are vital for the country’s development, emphasising that strong math and science skills are the foundation for STEM careers that will shape South Africa’s future. From engineering and technology to healthcare and environmental science, these subjects open doors to professions that are critical to national growth.

The competition also provided networking opportunities for educators, allowing them to share best practices and innovative teaching methods that can be implemented in their schools.

A Partnership with Lasting Impact

Through this collaboration with Nkomazi Mathematics Centre, ESDEF is building lasting educational opportunities that extend far beyond this competition. Winners received recognition and prizes, but more importantly, all participants gained valuable experience, confidence, and exposure to the exciting possibilities that mathematics and science offer.
