Lood Rothman

MR J L (LOOD) ROTHMAN – ESCOM SENIOR GENERAL MANAGER 1985-1988

Joseph Lodewyk Rothman known as Lood, was born on 1 December 1926 in Ermelo. He matriculated in 1943 at the Hoërskool Vrede. In 1947 Rothman then went to Stellenbosch University where he obtained a BSc in Engineering, and in 1948 he obtained a BSc in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current). He joined the former Rand Undertaking as Learner Engineer in 1949 and was later appointed Assistant Engineer. Between 1953 and 1955 he was Town Engineer (Electrical) for two municipalities, Vrede and later Ficksburg, but in 1955 Rothman again joined the service of ESCOM. He was seconded by Head Office to the Northern Cape Undertaking as Assistant Residential Engineer (Electrical) construction.

In 1953 he was again seconded to this Undertaking and promoted to System Planning and Construction Engineer. In 1969 he was appointed Manager of the Orange River Undertaking. He became the Manager of Undertaking during the same year. Mr Rothman was appointed Manager of the new Department of Production Assets in Head Office in 1975. He was a Professional Engineer and held the Government Certificate of Competency (Electrical). Rothman then went back to Head Office where he was appointed as a Senior General Manager in 1985 until 1988 when he retired after 34 years of service.
