Magnificent Seven

Eskom Distribution proudly presents the Magnificent Seven, a collection of ground-breaking solutions and products developed to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of South Africa’s power supply. This initiative encompasses a diverse range of technologies and programmes designed to address various challenges in the electricity distribution sector.

Green Energy Attributes

In collaboration with the South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN) funded by BMZ and implemented by GIZ, Eskom commissioned a study in 2021 on "Use Cases and Regulatory Requirements for the Implementation of an Energy Attribute Certification System for Renewables and Green Hydrogen in South Africa".

Active Partnering

Eskom's Active Partnering Programme fosters strong collaborations with municipalities to enhance their performance and operations. This initiative supports municipalities in addressing business and operational challenges, helping them recover financially and improve electricity reliability.

Demand Management Programme

To mitigate the significant challenges in balancing national electricity supply and demand, which often lead to energy constraints, Eskom Distribution has launched the Distribution Demand Management Programme (DDMP). This initiative aims to reduce load shedding and stabilize the power system, ensuring a more reliable electricity supply.

Distribution System Operator/Distribution Energy Trader

The Distribution Energy Trader (DET) is an energy trading platform for Distribution customers and private generators. The platform enables energy trading transactions, purchasing energy and demand resource offers from customers and non-Eskom generators connected in the distribution grid.

Wheeling

Wheeling refers to the delivery of energy from a generator to an end-user in another location using existing distribution or transmission networks. This can involve multiple networks, such as Eskom's transmission system and municipal distribution networks.

Microgrids

A microgrid is defined as a collection of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources (DER) within clear electrical boundaries, acting as a single controllable entity. They can operate independently (islanded mode) or be connected to the main grid, maintaining supply quality.

The Magnificent Seven initiatives highlight Eskom Distribution’s commitment to advancing technology and fostering collaboration to overcome the challenges in South Africa’s electricity distribution sector. By implementing these solutions, Eskom aims to create a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable power supply, benefiting both urban and rural communities while supporting the nation’s overall energy goals.
