Important advice and information in regard to your connection
Indicate in the application whether the application is for a:
  • New electricity supply
  • Change in supply size
  • Connection change, such as a line deviation
Conduct a load profile study to scope your load requirement – consult an electrical engineer to determine:
  • The electricity demand rating of the equipment you will be operating
  • The time of day the equipment will be operating
  • Whether you will be able to schedule your operation
  • Whether all equipment will be operating at the same time
This information will allow Eskom to determine:
  • How much electricity you need
  • The tariff options most applicable to your business
Note: The decision in regard to the above lies with you.

Be aware of the fact that the following costs may be payable for a new connection or any changes to an existing connection:
  • A deposit that covers three months of an estimated account; and
  • Connection charges, which covers the cost of the connection plus a contribution to upstream costs.
(Deposits and connection charges will differ depending on the cost of the connection, size of the electricity supply and the tariff chosen.)
Please go to https://www.eskom.co.za/distribution/tariffs-and-charges/  for Eskom’s tariff list – some of the options available are:
  • Businessrate (16 kVA / 25 kVA / 50 kVA / 100 kVA) – this is not a time-of-use tariff
  • Miniflex (>25 kVA / < 5 MVA) – this is a time-of-use tariff
  • Nightsave Urban Small (from 25 kVA to 1MVA) – this is a tariff suitable for high load factor supplies
A comparison tool that looks at what would be the most suitable tariff is available at https://www.eskom.co.za/distribution/tariffs-and-charges/ –  an electrical engineer could assist in providing you inputs into the model.

Eskom will, upon receipt of your application and supporting documentation, proceed to:
  • Conduct a site visit – the Eskom Call Centre will contact you telephonically or via sms to arrange a date and time for the site visit
  • Select the appropriate line / cable route
  • Negotiate the transformer / meter position
  • Conclude a way-leave agreement1
  • Apply for the necessary statutory approvals
  • Compile a technical design
  • Calculate the costs of the electricity connection
The above-listed activities could be completed within 30 days of your application. However, the time required varies and depends on the scope of work.
  • Call 08600 37566 should you wish to enquire about progress in regard to the above – give the Call Centre your reference number whenever you do an enquiry.

Step 3:

Eskom supplies you with a quote

The time required by Eskom to compile a quote varies and depends on the scope of work.

A quote for minor works can be provided within 30 days.  However, depending on the complexity, cost and size of the supply, Eskom may find it necessary to negotiate the time to compile a quote and may, initially, only provide you with a non-binding estimate before doing a quote.

The quote will set out the financial, technical and legal conditions. It will also list:
  • The deposit and connection charge fee payable
  • Choice of tariff
  • Supply size
  • Validity (normally 3 months)
  • When the connection will be done
The quote will also include the following documentation:
  • Letter of acceptance
  • Eskom supply agreement
  • Annexure A: Standard conditions of supply
  • Annexure B: Tariff information

A way-leave agreement is an agreement under which a property owner gives a service provider (for example, an electricity services provider) the right to install pipes or cabling passing through or over the property

You should ensure that your quote includes copies of Annexures A and B – the terms and conditions in these annexures form an integral part of your electricity supply agreement with Eskom.
  • Call 08600 37566 should you wish to enquire about progress in regard to your quote or, if you have received a quote, need clarity about information in the quote – give the Call Centre your reference number whenever you do an enquiry.
Note:
You have 30 days from the date on the quote to either accept or reject it.

Step 4:

If you are happy with everything you need to accept the quote by signing a) the letter of acceptance, b) the electricity supply agreement and c) a copy of the standard conditions of supply (Annexure A) and returning all to the address in the quote.

The deposit and connection charge (as stipulated in the quote) are payable before Eskom will initiate any work on the connection.
  • Payments can be made at First National Bank, EasyPay offices or via EFT (electronic funds transfer) – information about these payment options is provided in the quote.
  • You can either provide a bank guarantee or do a cash deposit when you pay the deposit (as stipulated in the quote).

Note:
The quicker you indicate whether you accept the quote the quicker Eskom can proceed with the construction of the connection.

Step 5:

Construction of the connection
  • The construction period may vary depending on the scope of work and government statutory requirements specific to your supply – this will be stated in the quote.
(The Eskom Call Centre will contact you telephonically or via sms to request access to your property on specific dates and times to do the construction.)
  • Call 08600 37566 should you wish to enquire when construction will commence and when it will be completed – give the Call Centre your reference number whenever you do an enquiry.
Step 6:

Switching on your connection

You can expect a courtesy call from Eskom for feedback on and assistance with any outstanding issues on completion of the infrastructure construction.

An Eskom official will be available to assist during the connection process.
