How to read your Eskom electricity meter

Reading your electricity meter is easier than you think! It may be a little tricky the first-time round, but it really is very simple.

  • Please always submit only the numbers to the left of the comma on your meter, even if they are zeros.
  • If your meter does not use a comma but you have numbers on the far right that are in a different colour e.g. red dials, do not record them in your meter reading.
  • The comma, any number to the right of the comma, or any number in a different colour is not required. Should you include it, your meter reading will be invalid and will be declined by the Eskom system.

Types of electricity meter dials

There are various types of electromechanical meters. The images below show the 4, 5 and 6 dial meters.
Your meter could have up to 9 numbers, the comma could be in black, or your meter could not have a comma at all.
Read four numbers from left to right.
Exclude any numbers to
