How does
Eskom
do this for you?

  • Tariff auditing and analysis is one of the tools Eskom’s energy advisors use to assist your business in selecting the most appropriate and cost-effective tariff that best suits your electricity usage profile. The wrong tariff could unnecessarily increase your energy costs.
  • Your current tariff category – whether you have a municipal or Eskom electricity supply point (local or non-local authority
  • Your supply size
  • Your supply voltage
  • Your transmission zone
Downloaded data will detail your energy consumption and maximum chargeable demand (kVA), as well as the applicable rates for the energy consumed. The tariff tool is convenient because it provides a yearly costing for the applicable tariff options for you to consider. Eskom also helps municipal managers to select the best tariff that suits their bulk electricity usage profile.
These comparisons enable you to make an informed decision regarding your tariff selection and can provide you with the peace of mind that your existing tariff is the most financially viable one.

How do you calculate your tariff?

Large power consumers are metered by means of an interval (time-of-use) billing system. This system equips Eskom to do accurate tariff comparisons with historical metered data using the tariff comparison toolkit. Small power consumers are metered by means of a conventional metering system with no data logging abilities. This makes it more challenging for Eskom to do comparisons for you as a small power user, however, with benchmarking principles and load profile information from your equipment, your advisor can perform a fairly accurate tariff comparison based on your usage profile.

How do you change your tariff?

Once we have completed your tariff audit analysis, you and your advisor may find that a better tariff exists for your operation. Your advisor will guide you through the application process to request a tariff change via Eskom’s customer contact centreWe will generate a new quote and you will have 30 days to accept. The new tariff application process can take up to two months as it is processed via various Eskom systems. Should your current deposit with Eskom be inadequate to cover current charges, then we will require a top-up on your deposit, which may require updated security.

The importance of power factor correction

It is important to know that power factor also affects the amount you pay on your monthly bill.  It is however only applicable to certain tariffs. Eskom will give you feedback on your power factor together with your tariff audit analysis.

Eskom has found that many large power users already have power factor correction equipment installed.  In many cases however, if not maintained, it may not be operational.  If your power factor correction is undersized and you are unaware of this, you could be paying a higher demand charge.

If we are able to download your meter data, we recommend that a power factor analysis is performed, together with your tariff analysis, to ensure we tailor the best energy productivity solution for your usage profile.
