Eskom academy pushing entrepreneurs to succeed
Wednesday, 03 May 2017: Fikile Khiva, the director and owner of Kamva Capital in the Western Cape is beginning to reap the rewards of successfully completing the Eskom Development Foundation’s Contractor Academy course last month.
Within the first quarter of this year, Khiva managed to secure two major contracts worth R2 million in the financial services sector and he credits much of this to his participation in the academy.
Khiva, along with other graduates from the Western Cape Contractor Academy, was awarded a certificate for completing the eight-month course that Eskom gives to emerging contractors and suppliers. This was part of their prize as finalists in the 2016 Eskom Business Investment Competition. The academy is a joint initiative between Eskom and the University of Limpopo and it is aimed at empowering small businesses and helping them to become sustainable and profitable.
Khiva established his Cape Town-based firm in 2013 and they focus on enterprise development services, project management, fund management, impact assessment and training services. They service both large and small companies and their clients include Pioneer Foods, Petro SA, Curro Fund Services amongst others.
Attending the Contractor Academy has equipped Khiva with the necessary financial, legislative and technical skills to grow his company’s operations and national footprint. They now have a presence in all coastal provinces and have also managed to employ two more people to bring the total to seven at their head office in Cape Town. This is over and above the two resources they have in each of the other provinces.
Khiva says the academy helped him gain confidence to engage with other like-minded small businesses, corporates and investors, to take his company to the next level. “The academy was a big eye opener for me as an entrepreneur and it helped in exposing me to the various opportunities that are available out there. I have been and continue to put in practice the key learnings and skills I gained to the benefit of my employees and company. We have more deals in the pipeline and are in a better position to grow from strength to strength going into the future,” he says
