Eskom helps improve learning at Gutjwa Primary School in Mpumalanga
Friday, 10 November 2017: The Eskom Development Foundation has donated 15 computers and school uniforms to 18 orphaned learners from disadvantaged backgrounds at Gutjwa Primary School in Makhahlela Village near Mbombela. As part of the donation, the Foundation also renovated the school’s computer centre.

The Department of Basic Education had previously installed the computers at the school with relevant educational programmes and also trained the educators on how to teach the learners using the programmes. By refurbishing the centre and supplementing the computers, the Eskom Foundation has made it more user-friendly for both the learners and their educators. Learners with learning difficulties can now also improve their computing skills at their own pace as there are more computers available.

Eskom Development Foundation CEO, Cecil Ramonotsi, says the donation forms part of organisation’s commitment to bringing about meaningful and sustainable development within South Africa’s communities. “We also want to contribute towards helping create environments that are conducive for children to learn and thrive. Eskom sees itself as more than just an electricity provider and through such donations, we want to ensure that every child, despite their family background or circumstances, gets to receive the kind of education they need and deserve,” says Ramonotsi.

Gutjwa Primary School, which was established in 1992, has learners from Grade R to 7. It is a small school but is making a difference within its community. The educators are motivated and driven by their common mission, which is to expose the learners to the full range of learning that is enjoyed by children in more developed parts of the country. They want to attend to their learning needs in an equitable manner and to equip them with various skills that can prepare them for the future.

The Eskom Development Foundation is tasked with implementing Eskom’s CSI strategy in sectors including enterprise development, education, healthcare, social and community development.
