The Ninth Decade

2004 - The National Energy Regulator, Nersa, is formed.
2005 - Mr Mohammed Vali Moosa is appointed as Chairman.
2006: Eskom makes its MYPD 1 application to Nersa. Disruptions to supply are experienced in Western Cape.

2007 - Gourikwa and Ankerlig peaking stations arecompleted.  Construction of Medupi Power Station commences.  Nationwide emergency load shedding begins in October.

2008 - A national electricity emergency is declared on 24 January. Load shedding ends in February. The return to service programme starts to add capacity.  Construction of Kusile Power Station begins.  Mr Bobby Gedsell is appointed as Chairman.

2010 - Mr Mpho Makwana is appointed Chairman, Mr Brian Dames, Chief Executive.  Nersa announces MYPD 2 tariffs.  Eskom secures loans for the build programme.

2011 - Mr Zola Tsotsi is appointed as Eskom's new Chairman.  Eskom connects its 4-millionth customer.  Eskom commits to reduce carbon emissions and be less dependent on coal.

2012 - Nersa approves Eskom's request to revise the April tariff increase of 25.9% to 16%. In October Eskom submits its MYPD 3 application, proposing a 5-year price determination period.
