Heat your home safely this winter and save lives
Friday, 20 June 2025: As winter intensifies across South Africa, numerous families rely on heating devices to maintain warmth and comfort in their homes. However, this time of the year often brings a rise in tragic incidents such as house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning linked to unsafe heating practices.
At Eskom, safety is not just a priority — it is a core value. Our commitment to Zero Harm drives everything we do. This winter, we urge all South Africans to stay alert, informed, and proactive about the safe use of heating equipment..
Know your heating devices
Whether it is electric heaters, gas heaters, or open-flame devices, each comes with its own risks. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and check that your appliance has the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) approval. Avoid makeshift or homemade heating solutions, and never leave heaters on unattended—especially overnight or while sleeping. “Avoid makeshift heating devices. They may seem harmless—but they often become silent hazards in our homes,” says Eskom’s Senior Manager for Health and Safety, Miranda Moahlodi.
Familiarise yourself with your heating appliances
If you’re using gas or paraffin heaters, proper ventilation is non-negotiable. Carbon monoxide is odourless and deadly. Keep at least one window slightly open to allow fresh air to circulate. Never use outdoor braai equipment, stoves or generators inside enclosed spaces. “It is tempting to shut every window during cold nights, but please leave one slightly open—your life may depend on it,” says Moahlodi.
Prevent electrical overloads
Plug heaters directly into the wall socket — never into multi-plugs or extension cords, which may overheat. Regularly inspect cords for damage and unplug heaters when not in use. Keep all heating appliances at least 1m away from curtains, bedding, furniture or flammable items. “A tiny spark can cause a significant disaster. Therefore, it is important to remind our children and all family members to unplug heaters as soon as they are done using them,” adds Moahlodi.
Warmth doesn’t need to come at the expense of a life
Ensuring your family’s warmth during colder months is essential, but prioritising safety is crucial. It is important for all members of the community, regardless of age, to be mindful of heating safety practices. Moahlodi urges: “Community safety is shared safety. Please check on your elderly neighbours, friends who live alone, and those without access to safe heating.”
Let’s commit to Zero Harm — Together
This winter, Eskom is actively engaging with communities to share essential safety tips and distribute educational materials. We are collaborating closely with municipalities, local leaders, and schools to raise awareness. By increasing our knowledge together, we can make better choices and ultimately save lives. Let us make Zero Harm a shared commitment and stay warm safely.
Stay warm. Stay safe. Save a life!
