Eskom is deeply concerned about alleged planned hit on former employee and is collaborating closely with the South African Police Service

Tuesday, 08 August 2023: Eskom continues to be deeply concerned about the alleged attempt on the life of its former fixed-term contract employee, Ms Mantombi (Dorothy) Mmushi since it was reported on 26 July 2023. The fight against corruption is extremely fundamental at Eskom and the organisation prioritises the protection of its employees who participate in the fight against corruption in terms of the Eskom Whistle Blowing Policy.

On 26 July 2023, after Ms Mmushi reported the matter to Eskom and the South African Police Service (SAPS), the SAPS immediately deployed an investigating team to Eskom Head Office in Megawatt Park to start an investigation into the alleged threat. A case was opened with the police on the same day at the Edenvale Police Station with the following case number: CAS 278/08/2023. Eskom is collaborating closely with the police to ensure that the matter is expeditiously and efficiently investigated.

Internal investigations are also ongoing, and should there be evidence linking any Eskom employee and/or suppliers to the alleged plot to kill the former employee, Eskom’s consequence management processes shall immediately kick in, which may lead to dismissal from Eskom’s employment and/or supplier blacklisting and opening of a criminal case.

Ms Mmushi exited Eskom on 31 July 2023 when her fixed-term employment contract ended. She was employed in the position of Middle Manager Forensic Investigations for two years. As a Middle Manager, Ms Mmushi led a group of Forensic Investigators and did not directly performing forensic investigations herself.

Eskom is resolute in pursuing those who have enriched themselves at the expense of our organisation and South Africa. We are ensuring that we have a robust framework in place for zero tolerance to fraud and corruption. There is also a strong collaboration with the law enforcement agencies and Eskom continues to strengthen the whistle-blower support for the Eskom Guardians who help the organisation uncover what is cloaked.

Eskom would also like to emphasise that where there are serious matters such as a person’s life being threatened, the matter should immediately be reported to the SAPS.
