Tuesday,
14 January 2020: The
power system is under pressure this morning following heavy storms and rains
that have hit Mpumalanga this week. This caused disruption to coal supply
overnight, but we have managed to recover in time for the morning
peak. We therefore do not anticipate loadshedding during the day.
Furthermore, we have adequate reserves for our emergency generators and dam
levels are high.
Unplanned
outages or breakdowns were at 11 723MW as at 06h30 this morning. We are
monitoring the power system closely while mitigating risks associated with
flooding and storms in and around our power stations and feeding mines. Our
engineers are working on system and design changes that are required to enable
us to cope with an increased risk of flooding. Should we lose some generation
units during the day, we will use emergency reserves. However, if we experience
drastic changes in the system, loadshedding may have to be implemented.
We
request our customers to work with us by reducing their demand as far as
possible in order to help avoid or reduce the level of loadshedding. We
will continue to give periodic updates on the status of the power system to
keep users and the public updated of changes as they occur.
